Episode 16: Sometimes it’s just one thing!
Wednesday Jul 13, 2022
Wednesday Jul 13, 2022
Sometimes we need to teach a single ‘rule of engagement’. We discuss such a case: the need for an animal to come when asked. This can be a life and death situation, as happened one year when Kayce needed to move her horse partner to evacuate for a hurricane at 2 am. Cooperation with this strange request was essential, but the horse did not want to suddenly wake up and get on a trailer. So Kayce made a point of teaching that she would follow up if she asked for ‘getting on a trailer’. A similar case came up with another horse who suddenly, after an injury and some extreme weather, chose not to come in when asked. Kayce and the horse's partner worked together to teach that coming when asked is not optional. They gently, but steadfastly persevered till the horse decided to cooperate. It is a matter of safety. But getting this point across does not need to be scary or stressful. Tune into what we did to change everything overnight. Then Kayce and Joseph explore a few other things. Thanks for tuning in!Video: Usually, our horses want to be with us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFeClufH6hM
